As I said beforehand- I will continue to use this blog on a regular basis (this week being the exception).

I am going to publish here a presentation I gave in PROBIGUA about a Saint or a Blessed. This project was used in order to catechize the maestras of the program, as well as to see how far I have come in the program. It si in both English and Spanish, and the video will be published to the photos drive. Please take a look and see. 

The Saint/Blessed I chose was Blessed Michael McGivney- whose feast we celebrate today!

BLESSED MICHAEL MCGIVNEY/ BEATO MIGUEL MCGIVNEY

 

-       “Unity and Charity is our motto. Unity, in order to gain strength to be charitable to each other in benevolence…”

o   (Card 1) “Unidad y Caridad es nuestro lema. Unidad, para ganar fuerza para ser caritativo unos con otros en benevolencia…”

 

-       This quote of Bl. Fr. Michael McGivney is one of the very few he has written and has been recorded as being a part of the declaration for the foundation of the Knights of Columbus. “Unity and Charity” are two distinct, but very powerful words that describe who Bl. McGivney is.

o   (Card 1)Esta cita del Beato Padre Michael McGivney es una de las pocas que ha escrito y ha sido registrada como parte de la declaración para la fundación de Caballeros de Colón. “Unidad y Caridad” son dos distintas, pero muy poderosas palabras, que describen qué él Beato Michael McGivney lo es.

 

-       Blessed Michael McGivney was born on Aug. 12 1852 in Waterbury, CT. He was raised in an Irish-Catholic family. He was the oldest of 13 children, 6 of whom died in infancy or childhood. Michael learned early in life about what it means to live in poverty and experience sorrow, but with the power of love, faith, and family fortitude he was able to overcome these challenges.

o   (Card 2) Beato Michael McGivney nació el 12(doce) de Agosto de mil ochocientos cincuenta y dos en Waterbury, Connecticut. Se crió en una familia Católica irlandesa. Él fue el mayor de trece niños, seis de los cuales murieron en la infancia o la niñez. Michael aprendió a temprana edad lo que significa vivir en la pobreza y experimentar tristeza, pero con el poder del amor, la fe, y la fortaleza familia pudo superar estos retos/desafíos.  

 

-       Michael was a good and proficient student in school who excelled in his academics. However, after the Civil War, at the age of 13 he left school to help his father to support the family. He worked in a brass and metal factory. 

o   (Card 3) Michael era estudiante bueno y competente en la escuela el la qué sobresalía en sus estudios académicos. Sin embargo, después de la Guerra Civil, a la edad de trece años, dejó la escuela para ayudar a su papa a mantener a la familia. Trabajó en una fabrica de latón y metal.

 

-       Throughout his early years in life, Michael McGivney always felt the call to become a Priest. He saw that a Priest shares in Christ’s sufferings and his pains. He understood that a Priest lives a life of celibacy. He understood that a Priest is to, first and foremost, celebrate the Mass for the people of God, as well as to visit the sick and the dying, and to be a minister of the sacraments. However, the greatest of all aspects that Michael was drawn towards was that of the Priestly Sacrifice, and that this aspect is directed towards an intimate communion with Christ, where the actions of a Priest are the actions of Christ. It is through this aspect that he desired to become an apostle fo Jesus Christ.

o   (Card 4) (Side 1)Durante sus primeros años de vida, Michael McGivney siempre sintió la llamada a ser sacerdote. Vio que un Sacerdote comparte los sufrimientos y dolores de Cristo. Entendió que un Sacerdote vive una vida de celibato. Comprendió que un sacerdote debe, ante todo, celebrar la misa para el pueblo de Dios, así como visitar a los enfermos y a los moribundos, y ser ministro de los sacramentos. 

o   (Side 2) Sin embargo, el mayor de todos los aspectos hacia los que Michael se sintió atraído fue el del Sacrificio Sacerdotal, y que este aspecto está dirigido hacia una comunión íntima con Cristo, donde las acciones de un Sacerdote son las acciones de Cristo. Es a través de este aspecto que deseaba convertirse en un apóstol de Jesucristo.

 

-       In 1868, at the age of 16 he left the factory job and entered into Seminary as a Semianrian for the Diocese of Hartford. He attended Seminaries in Quebec, Niagara Falls, Montreal, and finally in Baltimore, Maryland at St. Mary’s Seminary. Although he excelleed in English and grammar, he struggled with Latin and Greek, math, and Gregorian Chant. However, he persevered through his studies. He returned home in 1873 to support his family when his father passed away. He returned to Seminary in Maryland for 4 years to complete his academics. He was ordained a Priest in December of 1877. He celebrated his First Mass on Christmas Day at Immaculate Conception Church in Waterbury, CT.

o   (Card 5) (Side 1) En mil ochocientos sesenta y ocho, a la edad de diez y seis años, dejó el trabajo la fabrica y entró al Seminario como Seminarista de la dioses de Hartford. Asistió a los Seminarios en Quebec, Niagra Falls, Montreal, y finalmente en Baltimore, Maryland en Seminario de Santa Maria. Aunque se destacó en ingles y gramática, tuvo problemas con el Latin y el Griego, las matemáticas, y el canto Gregoriano. Sin embargo, persevero en sus estudios. 

o   (Side 2)Regresó a su casa en mil ochocientos setenta y tres para mantener a su familia cuando murió su padre. Regresó al Seminario en Maryland durante cuatro años más para completar sus estudios. Fue ordenado sacerdote en diciembre de mil ochocientos setenta y siete. Celebró su primera misa en día de Navidad en la iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción en Waterbury, Connecticut.

 

-       As a priest, Michael McGivney understood that the family is the center and foundation of ones own life. It is the family that became the center of his Priesthood- as he is a model for being a ‘Priest of the Family’. He understood family values, the sacrifices that families made during his time, and he also understood the amount sufferings within a family, especially in those families where the father- the “bread-winner” of the family was not around or desceased. 

o   (Card 6) Como sacerdote, Michael McGivney comprendió que la familia es el centro y fundamento de la vida propia. Es la familia la que se convirtió en el centro de su sacerdocio, ya que él es un modelo para ser un ‘Sacerdote de la familia’. Él comprendió los valores familiares, los sacrificios que las familias hicieron durante su tiempo, y también comprendió la cantidad de sufrimientos que sucedía dentro de una familia, especialmente en aquellas familias donde el padre, el ‘sostén de la familia’, no estaba presente o había muerto. 

 

-       Fr. McGivney, in his first assignment began the fraternal organization known as the Knights of Columbus. It is in this organization where he hoped that ‘Unity and Charity’ would come together. It became an orgaization where the men of his parish, under his own leadership, would help support those families who were suffering and needed assistance- financially, personally, emotionally, and especially spiritually. 

o   (Card 7) Padre McGivney, en su primera asignación, empezó(comenzó) la organización fraternal conocida como Caballeros de Colón. Es en esta organización donde él esperaba que se juntaran ‘Unidad y Caridad’. Se convirtió en una organización en la que los hombres de su parroquia, bajo su liderazgo, ayudarían a apoyar aquellas familias qué sufrían y necesitaban asistencia financiaría, personal, emocional, y especialmente espiritual.

 

-       It was his aim and goal that the men of the parish would unite themselves together and give charitably of their time, talents, and resources.

o   (Card 8)Era su objetivo y meta que los hombres de la parroquia se uniran y dieran caritativamente su tiempo, talentos, y recursos.

 

-       Fr. McGivney was a man of unity and charity. Unity, because his goal was family centered, meaning that the family needs to be united to be one body in support of one another- both the biological family, and the spiritual and parochial family. Charity, because the root of all things, including unity is that of love and self-giving.

o   (Card 9)Padre McGivney fue un hombre de unidad y caridad. Unidad, porque su objetivo estaba centrado en la familia, lo que significa que la familia necesita esta unida para ser un cuerpo que se apoye mutuamente, tanto la familia biológica como la familia espiritual y parroquial. Caridad, porque la raíz de todas las cosas, incluida la unidad, es del amor y la entrega.

 

-       Fr. McGivney died on August 14, 1890 at the age of 38. Throughout his 13 years as a Priest, Fr. McGivney impacted the lives of all that he has served. The Knights of Columbus, the organization of Unity and Charity, still exists.

o   (Card 10) Padre McGivney murió el catorce de Agosto de mil ochocientos noventa a la edad de treinta y ocho años. A lo largo de sus trece años como sacerdote, Padre McGivney impactó la vida de todos los que ha servido. Los Caballeros de Colón, la organización de Unidad y Caridad, todavía existe.

 

-       Fr. McGivney was beatified on Oct 31, 2020 in Hartford, CT following the Popes announcement on March 27, 2020. We celebrate his feast on August 13.

o   (Card 11)Padre McGivney fue beatificado el treinta y uno de Octubre de dos mil viente en Hartford, Connecticut. Nosotros celebramos su fiesta el trece de agosto.

 

-       For me, along with what was mentioned before, what inspires me the most about Fr. McGivney, is his humility and sacrifice as a Priest and love for the family. His example is a reminder for me, as a Priest, that the Priesthood that I serve is not mine, but Christ’s, and He is the one that desires us to be a family- to be a part of his body. McGivney was and continues to be Christ’s instrument as a ‘Priest of the Family’.

o   (Card 12) Para mí, ademas de lo comentado anterior mente, Lo que más me inspira de Padre  McGivney, es su humildad y sacrificio como sacerdote y amor por la familia. Recordándome, como sacerdote, que el Sacerdocio, que siervo no es mio, sino de Jesucristo, y él es quien quiere que seamos una familia, que seamos parte de su cuerpo. Padre McGivney fue y continúa siendo el instrumento de Cristo como un “Sacerdote de la Familia.”

 

-       (Card 13) (CONCLUSION) “God of eternal mercy, who set your priest Blessed Michael in the Church to comfort the suffering and the weary, the lonely and the oppressed with works of charity and a gentil heart, grant that, through his intercession, we too may become vessels of mercy in our day and so enter into our heavenly inheritance. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever.”
